Search Engines Overview

The Internet is a new medium and it offers tremendous scope for advertising and business promotion. Internet search engines (eg Google, AltaVista) help users find web pages on a given subject. The search engines maintain databases of web sites and use programs (often referred to as "spiders" or "robots") to collect information, which is then indexed by the search engine. “Directories,” which maintain ordered lists of websites provide Yahoo similar services eg!

In our daily work we always use Search Engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN etc. Search engines help users to find web pages of given queries or subjects. But have we ever think about it how these website appears related to our query or subject on 1 st , 2 nd or 10 th page? This all process is known as website ranking.

Lets see how Google process our queries.

Step 1. User enters Query to Google Web server from google.com.

Step 2. The web server sends the query to the index servers. The content inside the index servers is similar to the index in the back of a book--it tells which pages contain the words that match any particular query term.

Step 3. The query travels to the doc servers, which actually retrieve the stored documents. Snippets are generated to describe each search result.

Step 4. The search results are returned to the user in a fraction of a second.

Search engines always show results from two different areas one known as paid results and second as unpaid results. In Google paid results always show in right side by heading of sponsor links. All sponsor links known as paid results. And unpaid results on left site with complete url and meta and description. Paid results are said to be CPC refers to "Cost-Per-Click" and PPC to "Pay-Per-Click" — both refer to the same concept, but PPC refers more to the business model, and CPC to the actual price.
